Destination for Education responds to Immigration White Paper

Responding to the publication of the Government’s Immigration White Paper, James Pitman, Study Group Managing Director for the UK & Europe, said:

“Today’s Immigration White Paper does not go far enough to help Britain to recover its global standing in the higher education export sector. We have waited too long for too little.

The provision of 6 months of post-study leave for students falls short of what our competitors offer. The White Paper has no detail on the international student growth strategy that has been recommended by the cross-party membership of the International Students APPG. And the continuing confusion about the existence of the net migration target offers no clarity for students, who should not be a part of it.

The Home Secretary needs to set a clear and ambitious target to grow international student numbers – which should be supported by a cross-departmental strategy focused on recruitment and student experience. Now, more than ever, the government needs to show that the UK remains open to the rest of the world.”
